What a sight to wake up to. Sitting up in bed looking out to sea and a cloudless blue sky. We were both feeling so nervous and anxious. We were ready to just get cycling!
Breakfast was a quiet affair as everyone contemplated the journey ahead!!
It was great to hear from Darren that we needed to eat plenty, so after a full English, the bikes were checked over and we headed for the iconic signpost for our Lands End photographs.
What a moment, starting this amazing challenge. Lining up with our bikes, all in our Pedal Britain tops was a proud moment. Then we were off!
The route follows lovely country lanes towards Penzance. Having had several holidays this end of Cornwall is was great cycling along roads that were familiar.
The views over the sea to St Michael’s Mount at Marazion were beautiful. We stopped here for our first brew of what would be many excellent stops.
In fact spotting Darren’s van in a layby or car park became a much-anticipated site.
He said in the briefing that it was “a magic van that would appear just as your thinking – where is the van?” and he was right!!
There was always great food and drink waiting for us and always words of encouragement particularly after some of the hard climbs.
Often there would be something special to do with the county we were in eg Cornish pasties, Devon cream teas, Kendal mint cake etc
Our first lunch was at the Linden Hey Tea Rooms at Perranwell. What a spread.!! Definitely the best egg sandwiches ever! So many cakes they re-appeared the following day which was a treat as the lemon drizzle was fab.
Setting off again on a very full stomach, we headed down to the King Harry Ferry, which is one of just a few chain ferries in England, to cross the River Fal.
The afternoon was spent enjoying passing through small Cornish villages on quiet country lanes through St Austell.
